Moodboards with Ellen Atlanta

Introducing ~Moodboards~ a new series giving you an insider-look at the online/offline cultural inspirations, saves and likes of our favourite agency collaborators, community & friends.

This week we spoke with the unique talent that is Ellen Atlanta, a writer and brand consultant, specialising in Gen-Z and millennial culture. Having worked in the beauty industry for almost a decade, Ellen was a founding editor of Dazed Beauty and has worked as a consultant for beauty and fashion industry heavyweights such as BeautyCon, Estee Lauder, Boots, Flannels & FeelUnique.

Earlier this year she released her highly anticipated (and MUST-READ) book “Pixel Flesh: How Toxic Beauty Culture Harms Women” where she holds a mirror up to our modern beauty ideal and explores the realities of living in a digitally obsessed world where the pressure to present yourself both virtually and in person is all-consuming.

So Ellen, talk us through your Moodboard…

TIM WALKER

“I’ve had this Tim Walker print in my living room, hung right above my usual writing spot, for years now. I always come back to it as a source of inspiration – the beauty and the body horror, the otherworldly energy. As I start work on my next book I found myself returning to it again, drawing different stories from elements of the image. I just love everything about it.”

XTENDED IDENTITY

“I love what Xtended Identity are doing to bridge the digital and physical realms, and I absolutely need these headphone covers in my life.”

DINNER PARTIES

“One of my New Year’s Resolutions this year was to host more dinner parties, so my boards and saved folders are full of inspo. I love the idea of a white paper tablecloth to write on for guests, or to encourage attendees to annotate like a living guestbook. I think it would be so cute for a wedding or branded event.”

PEARLS

“I can’t say too much, but I’ve been thinking a lot about how pearls are formed recently… maybe for a new novel I’m working on. Watch this space!”

PORTRAITS OF GIRLHOOD

I’m always thinking about girlhood and its representations in art – whether in paintings or a TikTok commentary on how we use our Notes app. Francine van Hove and Zinaida Serebriakova’s works are 100 years apart and yet both feel so entirely contemporary and illustrative of our current experience; intimate moments, indulgences and desires. I write in Pixel Flesh about this mythological girl that defies time and space, and the reflection I find in these pieces exemplifies that.”

MURDER CAKE

“Still haven’t stopped thinking about how perfect these jelly cheesecakes were for the Pixel Flesh launch. Murder Cake is based in SE London and she’s so fab for events!”
