As one of the most beloved events on the fashion calendar, next year’s Costume Institute spring exhibition, ‘Superfine: Tailoring Black Style,’ takes a different direction from previous years, drawing on the political and aesthetic constructs of Black dandyism. We’re especially excited as this marks the first time since 2003’s “Braveheart: Men in Skirts” that the theme focuses primarily on menswear, and the first time ever that the exhibition centres on race.
As described by Co-curator Monica Miller, whose book inspired the exhibit, Black dandyism can be seen as “a strategy and a tool to rethink identity.”
With co-chairs including Pharrell Williams, Lewis Hamilton, A$AP Rocky, and Colman Domingo, we can’t help but think that the iconic Vogue fashion editor André Leon Talley, a champion of access and inclusivity, would have loved this theme.
We’re predicting elegance, opulence, avant-garde flair & experimental looks, a year menswear will truly shine, and we can’t wait!
