Shopping on Instagram was first available late last year, when shoppable photos were introduced. Then it was limited to only certain brands. Now, e-commerce company Shopify and Instagram are opening a feature to thousands of merchants.
This will allow Instagram posts to be tagged with items for sale. Users interested in buying the items displayed in posts can tap a link to view and buy them from the seller’s online store without leaving the app.
Merchants can only sell physical product like food, books, clothing, toys, art, stationery and electronics. Only five products can be tagged in both old and new posts.
Companies have until 16th October to get approval from Instagram to use the feature. It is currently being tested in the US. Once testing is completed, it will be available to everyone.
